1. Value
The most critical factor in creating a best-selling asset is bringing value to the buyer. “Resources and digital assets are essentially creative problem-solving,” says Jessica Johnson, a veteran asset seller with 10 years of experience in the digital marketplace. “You are either saving them time, saving them money having to hire someone, or helping them with something they can't do themselves.”
Creating high quality assets also builds trust and credibility with your customers, leading to potential repeat purchases and positive reviews.
2. Uniqueness
With countless options available, originality sets your work apart, providing a distinct identity that can capture the interest of potential clients. When type designer Silver Stag saw that 80’s serif fonts were trending, he set out to create a typeface with his own creative spin.
After experimenting with various options, he landed on a combination script and serif font titled Silver Garden. “The script is 100% hand-drawn and it brings a bit of that rustic feeling to the nostalgic serif,” Silver Stag explains. “I believe this combination, which wasn't really common back in 2022, brought a lot of attention to Silver Garden and made it stand out from the rest of the fonts.”
Many similar fonts have popped up in the marketplace since Silver Garden launched two years ago. “Even still, Silver Garden is recognized for its quality and it's among the best-selling fonts across marketplaces,” says Silver Stag.
3. Versatility
High-quality products that offer versatility can attract a wider range of customers and lead to higher sales. UI designer Tom Sarraipo created Digital Portfolio Layout to give creatives who were looking for a unique portfolio that would make their work stand out.
Tom’s Digital Portfolio Layout includes 20 pages of fully editable layouts organized by layer so that it can be customized easily to suit any project or personal style. “It’s versatile for any creative field — photography, fashion, design, UI/UX, architecture — and can be easily adapted for presentations as well,” says Tom.
Like Tom, designer Batzorig Regzen also focuses on providing versatility and functionality in each of his templates with his user’s goals in mind. “My presentation template contains many slides that are useful for users. I include options such as icons, flags, and maps, and the buyer can freely change the desired colors.”
4. Presentation
The preview image is critical for successful sales as it serves as the first impression potential buyers have of the digital asset. Batzorig’s focus is on "keeping the preview images of my products clean and beautiful” to help his presentations stand out from other templates in the marketplace.
In addition to having eye-catching preview images, it’s also important that it communicates exactly what you’re offering. “We do judge a book by its cover, because in the Assets page of Behance, it is all we can see at first. Make sure it's abundantly clear what your product is at a quick glance,” adds Jessica.
5. Marketing
Creating a high quality asset is just the first step. It’s just as crucial to get the word out there to your customers. “The key to standing out in the digital design landscape is sharing the work we created without a second thought We believe excellence comes with practice and experimentation.” says Mert Serim, producer and co-founder of Tallinn based design studio Dirty Barn.“
“In this age that also means being active on creative platforms and social channels,” adds Mert. "Understanding your target audience's needs is crucial before choosing tools and channels. Ultimately, success means being present where your community is.”
6. Community
Fostering a supportive community of customers gives you the opportunity for organic marketing and the chance to gather feedback for product improvements. “People like buying from people,” says Jessica. She has built a thriving community around her work by hosting livestreams and creating tutorials on how to use her brushes. Lately, she’s also started experimenting with short form content on TikTok to drive excitement about her next drop.
